Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the right to challenge specific calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
